Claire Mullen - Kenmare Half Iron Man - GTC 2006

By: Claire Mullan

The Kenmare half ironman is currently the only long distance triathlon held in Ireland.  This year's race had a shorter cycle than last year and a less demanding run course but was still a big undertaking, especially for those of us who were attempting it for the first time.  The 1.2 mile swim was fast on flat water with the help of a current but things got harder from there.  The 52 mile cycle included three big climbs to ensure that there was little left in the legs for the 13.1 mile run on rolling country lanes in blazing hot sunshine.  That man with the hose who was spraying us down as we passed his house on the out-and-back run deserves a medal.  Nine GTC members took part and made it to the finish line in good times.

I didn't make it past midnight in the Bridge Bar that night but was there long enough to see the ironman doing a Tony on the dance floor!
