Remembering Laura Thornton

Galway Triathlon club would like to offer condolences to the Thornton family following the tragic news of the passing of club member Laura Thornton, sister of Sarah Thornton.

Laura, who was in her early thirties was on a three week holiday in Cameroon, when she collapsed suddenly with breathing difficulties, and died on January second.

Laura had been treking in the jungle of Yaounda with friends on what she described as the trip of a lifetime.

Club Chairman Padraic Moran said: “I am filled with shock and sadness to learn of Laura's death, This tragedy has deeply touched all the members of Galway Triathlon Club and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Laura's Sister Sarah, her family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Triathlon and swimming in Galway has lost shining personality and its brightest smile. Suaimhneas síoraí dá hanam".

Laura’s body is expected to be flown home next week.

Irish embassy officials in Nigeria are helping with arrangements for the repatriation of Laura’s body.

It is expected that a post mortem examination will be carried out when her body is returned next week to ascertain the exact cause of death.

It is hoped that memorial services will be arranged after that.

Laura was full of fun and loved life, according to her brother Ian.

She travelled extensively, and was known and loved by many people across the city.

She was the youngest of 4 children.

After attending Salerno Laura attended GMIT, and then established a massage therapy business, in which she flourished, according to a family member.

Her father, a retired schoolteacher was also well known in the city.

The family say they have received an extraordinary level of support, and would like to thank the communities of Galway, and Oranmore.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this very sad time.
