2009 John Butler Sports Therapist Aquathon - Race 4

Summer returned last evening as GTCer's made their way to Sunny Loughrea for the first 'Away' race in the 2009 John Butler Sports Therapists Aquathon Series. The Predator club, hosts for the evening, had set up a beautiful course which included a swim in the perfectly crystal clear spring water of Lough Rea followed by a run along the path beside the lake through the small lakeside wood and out onto the road. The course then turned up an almighty 1K strech of a hill to the turnaround point, located aptly enough at the gates of the Graveyard.

In the Mens Race the Battle royal between the seasons top 3 resumed Owen Percy(G) and Tony McNichollas(G) gave themselves a one minute headstart on Andy James(P) and Dermot Lowe(G) out of the water. By halfway on the run however it was clear that Lowe was in command and eventhough he mistakenly took a detour at turn around and added a lap of the Graveyard to his course he has enough to spare in his sub 19 minute run to take the honours.
The ladies race was between the ever improving Catherine Dufficy(G) and Teresa Gannon(P). Dufficy showed not only that lake swimming is to her liking but also put in perhaps her best run of the season (22:38) to finish with a 43:30 total and the win in the Ladies section. Other performances of note were Derek Murray continuing his rehabilitation with a 19:18 run and Niall Callanan of Predator who's 18:07 for 5K last evening (fastest run split) must make him a real contender if he can manage to hold on to the leading pods in the water as the series progresses.
