Geraghty Salmon Run Sprint Champ 2009

Congratulations and well done to all GTC members who travelled the length of the country to race this weekend, but none more so than to Ruaidhri Geraghty who was crowned Powerade Salmon run champion 2009. Ruaidhri led the honours list in a day of firsts for GTC with Alan Mitchell (just back from European age group champs in Netherlands), Deirdre Hassett and Miriam Wall all winning their age groups in Ballina. A special mention as well to Kristin Raill who claimed another age group win in Carrick on Suir at the weekend. The NUIG post-grad student now travels to Athlone this weekend to attempt to add the National sprint championship (age group) to her national standard distance (AG) crown.

Sunday saw the revival of the Sligo Metalman Triathlon with a large contingent of GTC members taking part both as officials and competing. John timed, Emer Collins TD'ed and Deirdre refereed. There was some terrible weather the day before and on race morning, so the choppy swim was shortened to 1200m. The sun came out for cycle and run but the wind remained high making conditions difficult. The Galway contingent were  Barry Phelan, Shirley Potter (just back from Gobi desert ultramarathon), Gary Costelloe, Gerry Staunton (racing only a week after finishing IM Austria). There are no official results yet from Sligo.
