John Butler Sports Therapists aquathon - Race 1

Well done to all 23 athletes who lined out for the 1st of the “ John Butler Sports Therapists Aquathon Series” races. The race series, with its new title sponsor, was started in fine if slightly blustery conditions on a slightly augmented course. Undoubtedly this race will go down in GTC folklore as one of the most challenging ever, what with the few extra meters added to the run, the Corrib Princess, the very busy rowing traffic, the 2 rod fishermen hidden in the reeds just up from the start, and just to really add a bit a spice, an Archery club practicing mid way round the run course. Nonetheless the series welcomed many new faces last evening and expects to see many familiar faces return too as the series progresses.

The men’s race was a real ding/dong affair with Tony Mc Nicholas and the wetsuitless Rory “I’m not getting in until the last minute” Brennan leading the pod up river, but by the turn Owen Percy had taken a lead and led the men through the first lap of the run. It was not to be his night however as he was reeled in by Kevin Gow who ran a 20:51 to eventually finish second  to the scintillating Dermot Lowe who blew the field away with a 19:28 run.

The women’s race was an altogether more complicated affair with a number of competitors losing their way out on the run course.  First lady out on to the run, with an impeccable sense of direction in the water and out was Eileen Sweeney. Eileen was however chased down by some powerful running from Ruth Lynch (23:57 run split) and eventual winner Tara White (21:07 run split), who ran the 3rd fastest run split of the night overall.

Points of note
1) Please, Please study the map of the run course before the next race. If possible take time to recci the course on one of your training runs during the week. As this is just a club race we rely on each competitor to know the course in order for the race to run smoothly.
2) The ‘John Butler Sports Therapists Aquathon Series’ is still open for entries, so no worries if you did not make the first night, you can join up any night during the series
3) Archers fire at fixed targets, so the faster you are moving the better chance you have.
